Stacey Munger, D.V.M.

My name is Stacey Munger and I am the owner and primary veterinarian at Heart of Ankeny Animal Hospital.  I graduated from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006.

After graduation I began my career in a small animal practice in Richmond Hill, Georgia, a small suburb of Savannah.  It was a “small town vet” atmosphere and I learned a lot. There were no emergency clinics in our area so we offered after hours care. I learned a lot from the seasoned vets on staff and was blessed that they were willing to be patient mentors to the “new grad”!  Being the newest veterinarian on staff I got the privilege of being on call. A lot. I spent many nights giving advice and seeing clients at midnight! I gained a lot of confidence and realized my passion for surgery while in Georgia.

After enjoying two years in the warm southern climate I realized that Georgia was just too far away from home and took a job in Woodbury, MN with Banfield Pet Hospital.  The idea of corporate medicine was a turn off in the beginning.  I envisioned everything being about money instead of good quality medicine and personal relationships.  I realized over time that although corporations can affect some of the options that I had, they could not change the type of veterinarian that I wanted to be. I was very impressed with the high quality care and standards we were held to and still use a lot of the same protocols today. We had a positive environment and a wonderful team of technicians and reception staff to support us.  Our practice was extremely busy and employed 5 doctors.  I started as an associate in 2008 and worked myself up the ranks to Chief of Staff of the Woodbury location.  While working in Minnesota I also met my husband Bo. We were married in 2010 and welcomed our daughters Sarah (7) and Emma (5), and most recently Lucy (2) shortly after.

Although I enjoyed my job in Minnesota and the great team I had surrounding me, I had always held onto the dream of opening my own practice.  I enjoyed the fast pace of corporate veterinary medicine but sometimes resented the fact that I didn’t have more one on one time with clients or the time to make sure everyone received that personal touch.  I decided to go out on my own and knew the only place to do it was in central Iowa where I was born and raised. After careful consideration Ankeny seemed like a great fit for us!  We are so excited to watch the practice grow! Although it’s been an adjustment getting used to the slower pace as we build, it has been so nice to get to know my clients on a personal basis and know that I am able to give them my best.

In my free time I do as much as I can with my girls and family.  We live in NE Ankeny and are enjoying meeting new friends and neighbors.  My husband works for a nearby logistics company.  My oldest daughter, Sarah, is in second grade and enjoys cheerleading, basketball, softball, and playing the piano. Emma is in kindergarten and enjoys all sports and tumbling.  And little Lucy has just started talking in full sentences!  I hope they all grow up to share my passion for animals but look forward to seeing and supporting them wherever their interests may lead them.  I hope that one day, like me, they are lucky enough to turn their passion into a career and truly LOVE what they do!
